Why are Diverse Donors Important?

Diverse donors bring diverse blood donations containing various markers that are able to help a variety of unique patients in need. For most patients needing a blood transfusion, simple blood type matching is usually all that is required. However, in some cases, more advanced blood matching is needed. Patients with sickle cell disease or thalassemia, for example, may require frequent blood transfusions as part of their treatment. For these patients, they need close blood type matches to minimize any possible complications from their transfusion therapy.
